Title Tag

One of the most important factors in any search engine optimisation will be to achieve the correct balance of words in your Title Meta Tag.

The title tag will appear not on your web page itself but in the browser bar at the top of the page. The wording in your title tag will be used by the search engines in their results page. The user will click on the title text as this is used by the search engine as a hyperlink to reach your website, the content of the title should therefore be appealing to both the search engines and readers alike. As search engines now tend to disregard UPPER case your may write your title tag in a way that will be most pleasing and appealing to the reader. It's your first chance to sell your site.

The syntax of the Title Tag should look like this

<head>

<title>Meaningful description of page</title>

</head>

The content of your title should be given careful thought. A good example of this would be a hotel trying to attract new business; someone may start searching for hotel accommodation but put no location. This would obviously bring up many hotels from around the world so the search would be narrowed down by giving a location. This is where the title tag would play its part in helping you gain a higher ranking, as you would consider something like “hotel accommodation, Nottingham UK”. It is permissible to repeat a number of words in the title tag but this must be kept to one or two words, which should not be placed together. An example of this would be “hotel accommodation Nottingham, hotel rooms Nottinghamshire”. You should look to restrict the length of your page titles to between 60 and 75 characters, although some search engines allow longer title tags.

Title tags should reflect the content of the page they refer to. It is no good placing keywords in your title that aren't repeated within the body content of that page; if you achieve this good mix of words in both you will end up with excellent keyword rich title tags that add relevancy to the page copy of your web site.

In summary your title tag should follow these criteria:-

• Your title tag should not exceed approximately 60 to 70 characters, although some search engines will display more.

• Title tags should be well written to invite readers to click through to your website.

• Your body content remains the most important part of your website but your title tag should complement that content.

• Include the most important keywords or phrase at the beginning of your title tag.

• Always include some keywords or phrase in your title tag, do not just fill it with things like "our home page".

• Only include the main keywords for that page as including too many will dilute the strength of the others.

• Do not place your site name at the start of the title tag. If you really feel that your website name is necessary then place it at the end.

• Do not repeat keywords, it is currently accepted that no more than one keyword should be repeated and never place these together.

• Make sure each title tag is relevant to the page it is on; never use the same title tag for all of your websites pages.
