Search Engine Submissions

Many people advocate re-submitting to search engines on a regular basis. In reality this is unnecessary and should only be done if a site has substantially changed and has not already been updated by the search engine.

All search engine results will differ when listing results from keyword and phrase searches, this is because they will all use different algorithms when collecting information about your website. The search engines will use different criteria when calculating how they should rank your website. These algorithms are never static, search engines are always trying to improve them to increase relevancy in search queries and to cut out spamming.

These types of search engine rely on spiders that crawl over your site. If a search engine already lists your site then it will regularly spider it to make sure what they hold is up to date.

AltaVista Has both Express and Basic submissions. The Express Inclusion guarantees your urls will be added within 2 working days but on a 6 monthly subscription basis. The Basic submit allows you to add up to 5 urls but with no guarantee as to when they will get inclusion.

Lycos Has both Express and Basic submissions. Express is guaranteed within 5 working days, the free add service has no guarantee inclusion.

Google Has free submissions. You should only register your top level url as google will crawl the rest of your site from there. Google has very active spiders so you can expect to appear in their index within 1 to 3 months.

Inktomi Provides results for a number of search engines including MSN. It only has a paid inclusion program but this is not the only way to get listed. If you have links pointing to your site that are already listed in Inktomi then there is a chance that your site will get spidered naturally.

Teoma Is another important crawler based search engine providing results for AskJeeves. In common with Inktomi it doesn't have a free submit service, but again you might get included naturally if your site is linked to.

Many smaller search engines can also be found on the internet which will give you limited traffic.

Gigablast Gigablast is one of the growing search engines on the internet at the moment. Matt Wells the developer of Gigablast is an ex InfoSeek employee who has moved on to create his own search engine. Gigablast is unusual in that once you have submitted your URL its spider will almost immediately crawl that page; you are then indexed shortly after that.
