| Building link popularity is high on the website optimisation agenda currently. Most search engines are now placing some weight on link popularity, which means that the search engine ranking algorithm will look at the number of sites linking to your site. The more sites linking back to your site the higher your link popularity will be. Of course there is slightly more to it than that, the quality of your links is also very important. Two types of link should be targeted |

| • those with similar content to your site or a related common interest |

| • links from relevant categories of the major directories. |
| |
| Links for the sake of linking will do your page ranking no good. If possible any links should be accompanied with descriptive text along side it, this will add relevancy to the link. |

| Use the following strategy to increase your link popularity. |
| |
| First, research incoming links already achieved. The last thing you want to do is request a link from somebody who already has a link to your website. |

| Then research websites that are worth approaching for a link. Make sure these websites have similar content or relevancy. (a shoe manufacturer may want to request a link from a leather producers website). |

| Links should then be requested by either using the link request form of the chosen site or by sending a personalised link request to the site. If using email for the request make sure it is obvious that you have visited the site so that the recipient doesn't think it is an automated request. |

| Keep track of who has been contacted including domain name, URL of links page, whether it was an email request or through an automated process on the links page itself, text of the description requested to go alongside the link, and lastly any other comments that might be relevant to that link request. |

| Monitor the progress of the link requests, documenting any response, listing whether the link has been accepted or rejected etc. |
