Description Tag |

The description tag is used by many of the search engines in their site summary when listing the result pages. The description should contain your keyword phrases that are relevant to the page they are aimed at. Try to incorporate your keyword phrases at the start of the description grouping them together if this makes legible text.

The syntax of the Description Tag should look like this

<meta name=description content=Your descriptive text goes in here>

The description certainly doesn't get as much weight as the title tag, which coupled with your page copy content is your best source of optimisation. However, the description tag is still used by many search engines and so should be used to enhance what is already held in your optimised title tag and copy content. Description content should be approximately 200 characters long. You should try to expand on what has been written in your title tag using plurals and other keywords to make up one or two meaningful short sentences.

A well written description tag can often be used as the description for entries into directories such as ODP, Yahoo! and Zeal

As with the Title Tag, make sure you do not use the same description tag throughout your web site. Keep the text relevant to the content of that pages title tag and body content.
