The Anchor Tag

Anchor text is the actual text of a hyperlink and lies between the <a> and </a> tags.

The format of your anchor tag that defines both the source and destination of a hyperlink should look like this.

<a "href=http://www.domain-name.com/descripitive-title.html">descriptive text including keyword or phrase</a>

As an example, a link to our full search engine optimisation service would contain anchor text informing the user what they can expect to find if they follow that link. Review our full website optimisation services

Google will index this text on the site it resides which is then associated with the page it refers to. It is therefore very important that any anchor text that is associated with the link has a high relevancy to the referring page. The reasoning behind search engines placing a high relevancy on this text is that it should reflect the content of the page it is pointing to, thus containing as much descriptive content as the page title. In addition, the content of any external anchor text is seen by the search engines as being under the control of external sites and therefore cannot be influenced by the requesting site. This is therefore seen as a vote to the linked site.

It is important for those requesting links to encourage the selected sites to use the suggested anchor text allowing you to re-enforce the content of the page being linked to.

Don't forget that the pages of your own site can be used in the same way. Linking from one page to another using anchor text that describes the page a user is being passed to can be highly beneficial.

Anchor text in fact is beneficial to all parties. For Google and other search engines it helps relevancy. Visitors to your site get what they were expecting and hopefully you as the site owner get better position in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
