| Below is a glossary of terms that might be found whilst learning search engine optimisation techniques. This is not an exhaustive list and you may feel that an important word or phrase has been missed, or you might want a short explanation of a term you have seen recently. | Link Popularity | - | Building link popularity is now becoming one of the most important factors when trying to increase your websites rankings. Link popularity is based on the number of links that you have pointing to your site from others. These links are given more weight if they carry high relevancy. That is, the sites linking to your site are of similar content or have content that would hold relevancy to your site, or, the major directories that have relevant categories within them. Search engines are also placing weight on the anchor text placed alongside the link back to your website, therefore, when requesting links you should always suggest anchor text to be placed next to the link. |

| Search Engine Submissions | - | Many of the search engines still allow free submission to their indexes by adding the websites URL to a page which request the search engines spider to crawl your site. Google is the largest search engine to offer this service, although Google and others will eventually find your website given time. |

| Pay For Inclusion (PFI) | - | Ensures that individual web pages are added to a search engines index quickly by guaranteeing that the listed URL's are spidered on a regular basis. This is a fast and easy way to get your new web pages indexed quickly. However, PFI does not influence the ranking of any pages added this way. |

| Pay Per Click (PPC) | - | This is a bid based system where websites taking part bid for a position in the sponsored listings of a search engines results for particular key phrases. The sponsored listings usually appear at the top of the SERPs or to the right hand side of the normal listings. |

| Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) | - | SERPs is a term used to describe the results pages retrieved for a search query. Approximately 65 percent of click throughs come from the first page of results with the majority of the rest coming from the next two pages. Therefore its important that a website is found within the first three pages of the SERPs. |
